Overview

The Group covers several areas of Economics. One of those areas is Econometrics, with theoretical research including both microeconometric and macroeconometric topics and empirical work focusing on the area of Finance. In the area of Macroeconomics, the determinants of human capital accumulation and economic growth and the effects of macroeconomic policies are the main research topics. Related to International Economics, research focuses on the proposal of new indicators and assessment tools for the geographical structure of international flows and for measuring development (poverty, health, job quality). Sustainability and Change are also main research interests, more specifically environmental regulation, water management, energy economics and economic transition towards sustainability.

More specific research topics include: fractional regression models, robust model selection in rational expectations models, currency competition, impact of automation and robotics in economic growth, the economic consequences of climate change, climate econometrics, the social repercussions of inequality and poverty, effects of labour market policies, the role of training and peers in wage determination, sustainability for higher-education institutions, groundwater management models, behavioural economic models of resource use, nature-based solutions to environmental policy problems, geography of sea trade and economic regulation.

Main Achievements

  • Publication of several articles in high-quality economics journals (rated 3+ in the ABS ranking).

  • Launch of a new, international PhD Program in Economics (2016).

  • Organisation of the 32nd European Economic Association Annual Congress / 70th European Meeting of the Econometric Society in 2017.

  • Collaboration with the Portuguese government, providing input on economic instruments for environmental policy that were included in various pieces of legislation, such as the Basic Environmental Law (Law 19/2014) and the Green Tax Reform (Law 82-D/2014).

  • Production of several Stata and R packages, as well as the reference website, on fractional regression (http://home.iscte-iul.pt/~jjsro/FRM.htm).
