RECAP Analysis: A new tool for strategic diagnosis

BRU-Iscte researcher Fernando Ferreira has co-authored a new article in Strategic Change (Wiley) introducing RECAP Analysis, a diagnostic framework for strategic decision-making. The study, co-written with Marina Dabić (University of Dubrovnik and University of Ljubljana) and Andrea Caputo (University of Trento), was published on 5 October 2026.
Strategic diagnosis remains a persistent challenge for managers working in dynamic contexts. Tools such as SWOT and VRIO have been criticised for being either analytically limited or too theoretical to apply in practice. RECAP is proposed as a single and practical instrument that responds to this gap by joining three strands of strategy research – the Resource-Based View, the Dynamic Capabilities View and positioning theory.
The framework assesses organisations across five interdependent dimensions:
- Resources – the assets the organisation controls
- Embeddedness – how it is anchored in its networks and context
- Capabilities – its ability to deploy and renew those assets
- Appropriability – its capacity to capture the value it creates
- Positioning – where it stands relative to its market and competitors
RECAP is operationalised through a diagnostic matrix and a radar chart, allowing managers to assess strategic alignment systematically, identify gaps between internal assets and external demands, and define targeted improvement priorities. The study contributes to strategy research while offering practitioners a structured means of enhancing organisational adaptability and sustained competitive advantage. The article is available in open access.
The tool itself is available for download and use here.
