SUMMARY:BRU Research Seminar: Ludgero Glórias
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to attend the BRU-Iscte Research Seminar by Ludgero Glórias. \nLudgero Glórias is PhD candidate at the University of Surrey\, UK. \nTitle: Nonparametric “rich covariates” without saturation. (Authors: Ludgero Glórias\, Federico Martellosio\, João Santos Silva) \nDate: 25 September 2025 \nTime: 14h30 (2:30 PM) \nRoom: Building 4\, Floor 2\, A202 \nBrief description: \nWe consider two nonparametric approaches to ensure that linear instrumental variables estimators satisfy the rich-covariates condition emphasized by Blandhol et al. (2025)\, even when the instrument is not unconditionally randomly assigned and the model is not saturated. Both approaches start with a nonparametric estimate of the expectation of the instrument conditional on the covariates and ensure that the rich-covariates condition is satisfied either by using as the instrument the difference between the original instrument and its estimated conditional expectation\, or by adding the estimated conditional expectation to the set of regressors. We derive asymptotic properties when the first step uses kernel regression and assess finite-sample performance in simulations where we also use neural networks in the first step. Finally\, we present an empirical illustration that highlights some significant advantages of the proposed methods.

SUMMARY:Book launch "Silent Economy: The New Paradigm of Generative AI"
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to the launch of the book Silent Economy: The New Paradigm of Generative AI\, written by BRU-Iscte researchers Sandra Loureiro and João Guerreiro. \nThe event will be held on November 4\, at 14:00 (2 PM)\, in Auditorium A306 (Building 4\, Iscte). \nThis book explores the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and its wide-ranging impacts. Beginning with the concept of the silent economy\, this work traces the development of AI from its early stages to the present\, highlighting the emergence of generative AI. The narrative examines how AI influences organizational culture\, societal well-being\, and business decisions at strategic\, tactical\, and operational levels. The book also analyzes the evolving dynamics of the workplace\, consumer behavior\, and AI’s ethical and legal implications. The final chapter offers thoughtful reflections on future generations of AI\, presenting a comprehensive and insightful perspective on this transformative technology. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:BRU-Iscte Research Seminar: Frederica Mendonça
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Frederica Mendonça (Research Affiliate at Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Centre) \nDate: 2 December 2025 (online) \nTime: 1 p.m. \nDuration: 1 hour \nTitle: Road to somewhere: Introducing ReCycling in a Mozambican city \nBrief description of the seminar: Urban recycling in Sub-Saharan Africa remains below five percent due to coordination failures: households lack incentives to separate waste when collection is unreliable\, while collectors avoid markets with scarce supply. In this project\, I implement a randomised field experiment to test whether low-cost interventions can overcome this barrier in Quelimane\, Mozambique. The intervention combined household information on recycling with the creation of a buyback centre that engaged bicycle taxi drivers as waste collectors. A second treatment arm adds a conspicuous signalling device to reinforce pro-social motives from households. Within eighteen weeks\, cyclists delivered 3\,109 kilograms of recyclables\, exclusively from treated households\, while earning substantially more than on passenger trips. This translates into a significant increase in cyclists’ self-reported weekly earnings. Households report less burning and a 30% increase in separated waste. I also observe an increase in satisfaction with the city’s waste management. These preliminary findings suggest that mobilising informal transport networks\, supported by light-touch interventions with households\, can enhance recycling outcomes\, raise earnings\, and provide a scalable model for service delivery under weak state capacity. \nSession chair: Professor Catarina Roseta Palma

SUMMARY:BRU Research Seminar: Rafael Mesquita Pereira
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rafael Mesquita Pereira (Federal University of Rio Grande\, Brazil) \nDate: February 3\, 2026 (online) \nTime: 12:30 PM \nTitle: Heterogeneities of the value of a statistical life in Brazil \nAbstract: The Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) is a well-established metric in the economic literature that captures workers’ willingness to pay to avoid fatal workplace accidents. This measure has been widely employed in countries such as the United States to guide compensation amounts awarded to families of fatal occupational accident victims\, as well as in cost–benefit analyses of public policies that estimate the benefits of investments based on the number of lives potentially saved. However\, average VSL estimates often mask substantial heterogeneity related to worker characteristics and job attributes\, including gender\, race\, age\, industry\, and occupational risk history. To address this limitation\, the present study seeks to estimate VSL for the Brazilian labor market while accounting for these sources of heterogeneity. The objective is to highlight the need for public policies aimed at reducing yet another dimension of inequality observed in the country. \nSession chair: Luís Clemente Casinhas

SUMMARY:BRU Research Seminar: Joe Marlow
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Joe Marlow (University of Surrey and Central Bank of Ireland) \nDate: February 24\, 2026 (online) \nTime: 12:30 PM \nTitle: VARs and Local Projections Equivalence for Impulse Responses: Unit Roots and Multiple Instruments \nAbstract: We show that the equivalence in population between impulse responses in Vector Autoregressions (VARs) and Local Projections (LPs) can be extended to (possibly cointegrated) unit roots with unrestricted lag structure. We also prove that structural estimation with multiple instruments for multiple endogenous regressors (LP-IV) is equivalent to a recursively block-identified Structural VAR\, where the block of instruments is ordered first. Simulations and two applications illustrate our results. \nSession chair: Luís Filipe Martins

SUMMARY:BRU Research Seminar: Ana Paula Matias Gama
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Ana Paula Matias Gama (University of Beira Interior) \nDate: March 31\, 2026 \nTime: 14h00 \nTitle: Financial Resilience: Do Financial Capability and Income Inequality Matter? \nAbstract: This study examines the determinants of financial resilience using Sherraden’s financial capability framework. Drawing on data from 10\,245 individuals across ten countries from the OECD/INFE 2020 International Survey of Adult Financial Literacy\, we analyze the roles of financial literacy\, financial inclusion\, and socialization\, alongside the moderating effect of income inequality. Results indicate that financial literacy and inclusion significantly enhance resilience\, while socialization shows mixed effects\, particularly under high inequality contexts. Income inequality consistently reduces resilience and attenuates the benefits of literacy and inclusion\, underscoring structural constraints on individual capabilities. Disaggregated analysis reveals heterogeneous impacts across six resilience dimensions\, with literacy strongly linked to fraud awareness and inclusion in savings and coping strategies. Sociodemographic factors such as education and employment further shape outcomes. These findings highlight the interplay between individual capabilities and contextual conditions\, offering insights for policy interventions aimed at fostering financial resilience globally. \nSession chair: João Pedro Vidal Nunes
